The holidays are a joyous time where we can reconnect with our loved ones; however, this can also be one of the most stressful time of the year.

Your mental health is just as important, if not more, than your to-do list. So, we’ve come up with some helpful tips to reduce holiday stress.

The most common reason cause of holiday stress is financial. The best way to avoid financial stress is to set a budget and stick with it. During gift exchanges, set a spending limit between all involved and avoid buying anything not in your plan. Don’t skip paying your bills and set aside a little money for small joys like going out for lunch or dinner.

Exercise can be one of the best ways to reduce and eliminate stress. Whether you go for a walk, workout in a fitness facility, or practice yoga in your apartment, fitting in time for exercise can make a huge difference in your holiday stress. Too busy to exercise? Try taking the stairs instead of the elevator, use a standing desk, or dance while you clean the apartment.

Getting outdoors and into nature can help to reduce stress. Take time this season to get outside and clear your mind and refresh your point of view. Here in Toronto, there are numerous public skating rinks and loads of parks to enjoy. Earl Bales Park has a ski school and public downhill skiing just minutes from our Faywood-Vinci Community. Try combining getting outdoors with a fun activity like skating, snowshoeing, skiing, or even tubing.

Drawing, painting, and colouring are therapeutic ways to relax. Colouring relaxes the part of our brains that controls our fear response. Adult colouring books, random doodling, or following along to art therapy videos can help reduce stress and relax your mind.
