Water Saving Tips While Living in an Apartment

Excessive water usage can contribute to pollution, health hazards, and even the lifespan of our current water supply. Luckily there’s several things we can do to conserve water, even while living in an apartment.

Limiting your consumption with a few simple amendments can help make a big difference in the future. A short 7 minute shower combined with a water-saving shower head can save more than 26 litres of water. Which means, over a year’s time, we can save over 9,000 litres of water per person.

About two gallons of water flow from our faucet per minute. If you turn the tap off while brushing your teeth, you can save up to 15 litres of water per day. And to avoid wasting water while you wash your hands, turn the tap off with your wrist or keep just a trickle coming out while lathering.

In the kitchen, the water from your boiled veggies or pasta can be saved. Once cooled, use it to water your plants. When hand washing your dishes, fill a basin with warm water for rinsing rather than running the tap. Keep a large jug of water in your fridge so you’ll always have cold water to drink, without having to run the tap until the water cools.

Ensure faucet aerators are installed on all your taps throughout your apartment. Because aerators introduce small bubbles into the water, the faucet can run longer using less water. Additionally, installing a dual flush adaptor to the toilet will allow you to use half as much water when flushing. If your property manager doesn’t approve of dual flush adaptors, make your own low-flow toilet with this handy trick.

While limiting your consumption is the best way to reduce water waste, it’s also important to check for leaks. Routinely check your faucets, toilets, and tub for leaks. If you notice any water leaking or your toilet running longer than normal, contact your property manager to have them inspect it.

High-efficiency appliances and fixtures will also help conserve water. If you’re apartment doesn’t have any, consider asking your property manager for an upgrade. Alternatively, many of our Toronto and Mississauga apartments offer upgraded suites with high-efficiency appliances and fixtures. Contact us when you’re ready to make the move.
