It can happen so easily- leaving the popcorn in the microwave too long, forgetting to take out the stinky trash, or cooking a fragrant meal and forgetting to turn the fan on.

Whatever the cause, you are left with a potent and persistent smell!

It's difficult when living in an apartment building, to banish smells without masking them. It's not always possible or effective to open all of your windows and air out the smell, especially during the rainy and cold seasons.

We at Compten Management Inc., would like to share a few natural tips and tricks that will help you banish that smelly odour for good!

Let's get to it!

House plants are a great start. These silent assassins filter out odours and air pollution. Placing a few plants in your apartment will not only help absorb odours, but they also provide a variety of health benefits- from reducing stress to decreasing blood pressure. Don't have a green thumb? Boston ferns, snake plants, and spider plants are very hardy and require little maintenance.

When you are in need of a tough odour fix, turn to vinegar! Absorb odours by placing a bowl with equal parts vinegar and water in the room. When cooking, sit a bowl of vinegar and water next to the stove to trap the odours before they leave the kitchen.

Baking soda is another heavy duty odour eliminator. Sprinkle baking soda over carpets, leave for at least 30 minutes or overnight if possible, then vacuum up. This method also works for couches, chairs, and other upholstery.

Do you have a smelly microwave? Clean it and remove built up odours with this simple method: Mix equal parts vinegar and water in a microwaveable safe container, insert a wooden stir stick or skewer (bamboo works as well), then microwave for 5 to 10 minutes depending on how messy your microwave is. Important safety tip: The wooden element will keep the liquid from boiling over and prevent a glass dish from exploding. Let stand for a minute. After removing the container safely with oven mitts, simply wipe down the surfaces of the microwave with a cloth or sponge. The clean smell will even last for a few subsequent uses!
